CHAPTER 19
Michel knew he was going to be sick. He could hardly stand to watch as the newly found love of his life and near sixty men stormed the smaller ship. Worse, it brought back terrifying memories of when his own ship was taken. He kept his eyes trained on the red kerchief of his matelot as he went over the side and landed on the deck of the sloop, knowing full well that on his own word he should have been right beside him, a thought that frightened him to his core. He did not wish to believe this was now his fate--the taking and plundering of ships and the murdering of innocent victims that ensued--and he was powerless to stop it. God, how he was going to be sick.
He found himself wedged between Marcus, the attractive blonde man he now knew was the captain’s sultry matelot, and Alex, both of whom were firing their pistols at the Spaniards now scattering for cover. But Michel was frozen in place until Alex tugged at his breeches.
“Hey! Ya’ bes’ not just be standin’ there! Ya’ could get shot!”
Breathless, he dropped down beside him still shaking.
“Everybody is sayin’ you and our quartermaster be matelots,” Alex grinned at him as he reloaded.
Michel flushed. “Non.” His voice shook. “Why?”
“I dunno. They b’ saying he dueled ya’ to claim ya’ outright in front of the others then he fucked ya’.”
Michel’s face went hot. “You said matelots board together,” he managed, as surprised at all the loose talk as he was that he could even form a coherent sentence under the circumstances. They certainly did not need Alex spreading any stories, however true.
“Yeah. I suppose you’re right. ’Specially since Galen be the quartermaster. He always boards,” Alex concluded. “Hah! Let the bloody bastards have it!” Alex suddenly snarled out, drawing his attention back to the deck. As he peeked over, he saw a man heading toward his matelot, his pistol drawn. His heart leapt into his mouth. Without thinking, he fired at the same time his matelot fired, sending the man spinning then dropping to the deck. He had been drawn into the melee before he was even ready. His heart pound furiously as the havoc unfolded before his eyes. He quickly reloaded, and fired again at another man approaching Phillip as he made his way up toward the bow expending the last of his powder. The other men including the Musketeers continued the relentless assault from the Fair Wind.
He could hear the clashing of swords and men yelling and cursing in Spanish, but with the rising smoke from gunfire, it was near impossible to keep track of his matelot. He was seized with panic and scanned frantically for any sign of him as if it were his own life he worried over. Marcus handed him more shot.
He did his best to reload as Alex settled beside him, brown eyes wild, his breath coming in excited pants. Michel regarded him strangely. He was conflicted as to the merits of the men beside him who sent a steady round of gunfire at the sloop.
